Family Violence Intervention Order

A Family Violence Intervention Order (FVIVO) is an Order of the court that provides protection from one person against family violence (in its various forms) from a family member.

‘Family member’ means people you are related to, treat like family or have had an intimate personal relationship with, whether short or long-term. It can mean a carer or support worker.

​The order has conditions (rules) that the respondent must follow. If the respondent does not follow the conditions, it is very serious and the police can charge them with a criminal offence.

Personal Safety Intervention Order

A personal safety intervention order is an order made by a magistrate to protect a person from physical or mental harm caused by someone who is not a family member. This can include physical and mental harm. Protection can also be sought for children and property.
